The Lesbian and Gay Equality Project has appealed to President Jacob Zuma to withdraw the appointment of columnist and self-confessed homophobe Jon Qwelane as high commissioner to Uganda.
Qwelane, who equated homosexuality with bestiality in a column in the Sunday Sun in July 2008, is expected to be announced as the new high commissioner by the Department of International Relations tomorrow - at a time when that country is considering introducing legislation banning homosexuality and imposing harsh penalties, including the death penalty.
News of Qwelane's impending status change was met with anger from gay and lesbian communities, with all appealing to the government to reconsider the decision. The Equality Project said in its letter to Zuma that because of Qwelane's remarks, a complaint of hate speech had been laid at the SA Human Rights Commission. The hearing was imminent.
