NORTH WEST PROVINCE TO CROWN ITS KINGS AND QUEENS

Published on: 28 June 2010

The 2010 Kings and Queens of North West pageant and talent search will take place on 24 July at the Klerksdorp City Hall.

For the past three years, members of the lovely and talented gay and lesbian population of the North West Province have competed in this annual pageant and talent search. The event has traditionally been held in Mafikeng and has been very popular.

This year the event starts spreading its wings to reach other areas of the province and will for the first time be presented in Klerksdorp, or Matlosana, as it is now known. The municipality of Matlosana has generously made the City Hall available for this event on 24 July. The doors open at 18h00 and after the pageant the party will continue until dawn.

This year there are also more categories to compete in. Apart from the usual Miss Gay and Mr Lesbian categories, a Mr Gay title was added last year. There is also a newly-added Miss Lesbian category, while the talent search section has grown to include singing, dancing, drag and an open section.

More organisations - that strive to bring relevant services to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people of the province - have come on-board in 2010. Gay Umbrella, the host, is a community based organisation and is joining forces with OUT LGBT Well-being (North West) and Health 4 Men.

Apart from the fun of the pageant, there will also be a more serious side with organisations handing out information about their services. The Aurum Institute and Lifeline have indicated that they will be there to assist members of the LGBT community with any problems they may experience. OUT will be also conducting free HIV counselling and testing, while prevention information and methods will be available free of charge thanks to Health 4 Men.

Entrance at the door, and for the contest, is only R30 per person and there will be a cash bar and food for sale.

Kings and Queens of North West promises to be a joyful evening full of fun and laughter. You are advised to keep this date open and bring your friends to this playful event. For more information, bookings and entry forms, call Milly on 073 157 1791 or 082 521 5497.
