There is very little research into LGBT issues. It is especially true when it comes to quantitative and scientifically valid data. OUT actively aims to build a body of knowledge related to LGBT issues for use in programme planning as well as to lobby relevant decision makers.
The following studies have been completed:
- Levels of empowerment of gay and lesbian people in Gauteng. It is the first study of its kind. It is a valid and reliable study, representative of the variables of race, gender, age and level of resources. The study has comprehensive data and focused on three broad areas: biographical data, experiences with macro mainstream service providers, and micro personal indicators of wellness. The study has been duplicated in KwaZulu Natal and in the Western Cape. Currently the findings of the three different provinces are being compared and the studies will be taken to Mpumalanga and North West Provinces in 2008/9.
- HIV and sexual practices of men who have sex with men (MSMs). Because such poor data existed in South Africa concerning HIV and sexual practices of MSMs, OUT LGBT Well-Being held focus groups in 2002 to determine what sexual health/safer sex issues were faced by a resourced group of MSMs. This endeavour to learn more about the sexual customs of MSMs included an online questionnaire survey compiled in collaboration with staff members from the Centre for the Study of Aids (CSA) in December 2004-January 2005. This was done to test whether the issues identified in the focus groups applied to a larger, more representative sample of the South African MSM population. This OUT initiative was the first of its kind to be conducted in South Africa with the primary objective of assessing the sexual behaviour of young MSMs. The information provided by the survey helped facilitate the development of a fun online intervention for young gay men; providing information and help on practicing safer sex. The key findings of the research provided useful descriptions and profiles of those MSMs that participated; their particular internet usage and behaviours; their lifestyle issues; MSMs sexual practices and interests; their habits around condom and lube use; reflection of current STI and HIV knowledge; their relationship experiences; patterns of recreational substance use; and overall psychological well-being of the particular MSM group.
In 2006/7 OUT completed a study on
lesbian sexual health. It covered issues such as identity, relationships, sexual experiences, alcohol and substance use, and HIV.
In 2008 OUT will start with collaborative research focussing on Minority Stress and HIV Prevalence (University of Columbia/New York & the Human Sciences Research Council) and Stigma and Health Seeking Behaviours (Population Council/New York).
